Bandlands

Hillstomp at 19 Broadway. Wednesday the 9th.

Never heard of them, wandered in and heard some really gritty delta blues
They called it Northern Mississippi Punk Blues...they definitely are mining
a very rich and rarified Mother Lode that lies back there in Music History and still alive no doubt in
the Delta and here and there on stage in 19 Broadway. Hot little duo rockin' stuff, reminding me of course
of Danny and his solo work which draws so heavily on That whole tradition, Son House etc.
as well as Chrome Johnson of which you have heard of plenty here.

Thumping raw sound, the old Mics and vocal distortion stuff were kind of cool though ...
for me a bit too much... an affectation.. Twas very High energy and no surprise why these guys were getting
the strong response from the crowd that night at 19 as well as on their tour.

     Rawkin...

    Henry Kammerer and John Johnson
  are HILLSTOMP ... One Word

I had plans to see Darren and his buddies from The Fitts down at Peri's that same night so I wandered
     on down the street.

Left to Right Lil Denny sitting in on Irish Bouzuki, with Darren Nelson,
 Don Gallardo and Joey Midnight.

It was some warm jamming not exactly tight but
friendly and productive of a real good time. Darren gave a couple of his originals from the Jumbo days maybe it was just one and that being.... the famous...'Take Me To The Hills' I think these guys are really enjoying this little Wednesday night gig which is a nice respite from their Fitts gigs with the big Marshall amps. Don Gallardo leads The Fitts & they are building a strong following....I like this low key venue for them...

All you Jumbo fans... there is some news that I am going to let out
here that is going to make you real happy, real happy coming up....

Actually tonight is the Saturday Morning that followed Friday Night and Friday night I went out to hear the Sky Blue Band for the first time since the Blackberry Jam.

At first I thought well this is a good night to take a couple of pictures and say hello and not worry about trying to record the sounds because well the sounds were well... how do we say politely ...sort of hit and miss. but you know just when I wasn't ready they started playing real great and so finally went out and got the Video Camera and filmed a few magic moments as it were
and maybe someday...
That's Greg Ellis, drums, great vocals too, moving soon back to Maine where no doubt, he'll hook up with all those great players like Bobby Page and John Rennie..who he used to play with when he was 10 years old! That's what Ellis tells me.
That's Dan Healy, guitar you know Dan don't you all you Dead Heads..? sound man extraordinaire! The man plays guitar too..!
That's Bruce Gapinsky, Bass.. mighty fine Bass man...stellar!
That's Phil Wood, keys, you know Phil from the videos. Not those Videos, I mean the ones on Bandlands.  kiddin..
; )
That's the famous Walt Dickson, guitar, Vocals & Dickson Heating & Air Conditioning... but that's another story. Thirty years playing in the same bar. The Paper Mill Creek Saloon in San Geronimo.

  It's allright!
